Presented by: Lyon Johnson, M.A., NCSP, Education Specialist, Special Education Service Agency of Alaska
This session is geared towards: Teacher, Admin, Higher Ed
Level of Session: Basics, Tips and Tricks
As an education specialist, Mr. Johnson and his colleagues at the Special Education Service Agency (www.sesa.org) spend workdays flying to remote Alaskan villages to provide much needed technical assistance and training for educators. That is, so they can provide interventions and supports for students experiencing social, emotional, behavioral, developmental, and sensory-based disabilities.
Using Google Apps for Education, Mr. Johnson has developed distance delivery protocols to mitigate issues related to distance/logistics, extreme weather, and increasing travel costs. This presentation will first explain the unique backdrop of education in Alaska and the issues experienced by Alaskan educators. Then, the presentation will explain how SESA is deploying Google Apps for Education and other e-technologies to simultaneously to: 1) solve capacity-building problems in the area of special education and behavioral health, 2) increase educators access to professional development and higher education coursework, 3) increase the quality and continuity of special services to remote Alaskan school districts, villages, students and families.
